Scharlooweg 55
Function: under construction
Before After

Scharlooweg 55 is one of the luxurious urban villas of Scharloo. David
Senior jr. had the house built in 1875. Morris Cardoze, an amateur
architect, made the design. It is a fine example of the neoclassical
style. Most characteristic is the monumental façade with a wide fronton
on coupled pillars.
In the first part of the 20th century the house has been the parental
home of the national hero George Maduro, who lost his life during World
War II and
after whom Madurodam was named.
Stadsherstel bought the villa in 1992, and restored
during 1993-1994. The building consists of one floor on a
relatively high basement. Formerly the
basement had servant’s rooms and
under the patio there was a cistern. During the restoration the patio
has been covered with a roof and the former
cistern has been converted
into a filing room.
Since the restoration the property has been rented out as an office
building, first to the Rabobank and afterwards to the Maduro & Curiel’s
Bank and
since 2002 to the representation of the
Netherlands in the Netherlands Antilles.
