Sessin Halabi had this house built around the forties of the 20th
century. It is located at the Bitterstraat/Van Raderstraat corner in the
westernmost part of Scharloo. On the first floor there is an apartment,
which originally served as a dwelling for the Halabi family. The space
on the ground floor had been
designed as a business accommodation. Here
the Pichardo brothers had a well-stocked grocery for years.
The structure is built in concrete, which had become the usual building
material by the middle of the 20th century. Typical of the building
period are the colored windowpanes of the apartment on the first floor.
Stadsherstel had them beautifully restored during the renovation that
took place in 2000, shortly
after the building was purchased. The most
characteristic part of the first floor is the protruding round
turret-like balcony on the corner. The narrow vertical
openings are very
convenient in the local climate for letting fresh air in and keeping the
sun out. After the restoration, the apartment on the first floor has
been rented out for some
time and since 2007 the department of Kas di Cultura has
its office in this 200 M² space. The groundfloor facilitates the DARE
station.
